Description
Holotype
Incomplete specimen with 39 anterior segments,
14 mm
long,
1.6 mm
wide at chaetiger 3– 6. Prostomium T-shaped, with two anterolateral processes. Four black eyes present in trapezoidal arrangement. Caruncle extending posteriorly to chaetiger 7. Occipital antenna present (
Figure 5A
). Peristomium wider than long, expanded laterally (
Figure 5B
). Palps extending posteriorly for 14 segments. Body and palp pigments absent.
Chaetiger 1 well separated from peristomium; long cirriform notopodial lamellae and triangular neuropodial lamellae; neuropodial lamellae longer than following segments (
Figure 5A
); unilimbate neurochaetae present; notochaetae absent. Chaetigers 2–4 with well-developed notopodial fascicles of unilimbate chaetae arranged in two rows: shortest and thickest chaetae in anterior row (
Figure 5C
); posterior row longer than anterior row, with chaetae becoming longer in upper side of fascicle (
Figure 5D
), and lower side shorter and thinner than chaetae from first row (
Figure 5E
); in middle and posterior segments with tufts of two
types
of chaetae: unilimbate chaetae (
Figure 5F
), and serrated chaetae (
Figure 5G
) thinner and shorter than unilimbate chaetae. Neuropodia of chaetigers 2–4, 6 and 7 with dense fascicle of broad bilimbate capillary chaetae. Bidentate hooded hooks from chaetiger 8, not accompanied by capillaries, with up to 25 hooks per fascicle; hooks with reduced angle between teeth and a constriction on shaft (

).
Chaetiger 5 similar in size and shape to chaetigers 4 and 6; noto- and neuropodial postchaetal lamellae well developed; with superior dorsal geniculate unilimbate capillaries (
Figure 5I
), fewer in number than those chaetae on chaetigers 4 or 6, and ventral winged capillaries (
Figure 5J
). Two kinds of major spines arranged in a Ushaped double row, with pennoned spines in outer row and falcate spines in inner row; pennoned spines with curved tip and constriction between tip and shaft (
Figure 5K
), numbering up to 16 per fascicle; falcate spines with a subterminal protuberance (
Figure 5L
), numbering up to 14 per fascicle.

Branchiae on chaetigers 7–38; all basally free from notopodial lamellae. Glandular pouches largest and paired in segments from chaetiger 6–7 (
Figure 5A
), pouches not evident in other segments.
Gizzard-like structure in intestinal tract absent.
Pygidium unknown.
Female, with oocytes developing in clusters in chaetigers 20–39.

Major spines of chaetiger 5 arranged in a U-shaped double row; with 14–21 pennoned spines, and 11–16 falcate spines. Branchiae from chaetiger 7, continuing to chaetiger 27. Hooded hooks from chaetiger 8, with up to 15–27 hooks per fascicle.
Ecology
Inhabits muddy-sand tubes in soft bottoms.
Remarks
Pseudopolydora floridensis
sp. nov.
is similar to
P. corniculata
Radashevsky and Hsieh,
2000
in the shape of the peristomium and notopodial lamellae on chaetiger 1, caruncle extending over chaetiger 6, and large paired glandular pouches present in chaetigers 6 and 7;
P. floridensis
differs from
P. corniculata
in having triangular neuropodial lamellae in chaetiger 1 instead of ciriform lamellae, chaetiger 5 with spines arranged in a U-shaped double row instead of a weak J-shaped almost vertical row, major spines with a subterminal protuberance instead of simple spine with slightly bent tips.
Etymology
The specific name refers to the collecting site.
