Caraș-Severin : “160. Sempervivum patens m. Flores albi apice campanulato-expansi. Rosula expansa, foliis mediis erectis. In rupibus calcar. pr./supra Thermas Herculis [Băile Herculane] alt. 1500’ solit. d. 26./8. 52 [ 26 August 1852 ]” Grisebach 160 ( GOET 002328 !, the specimen on the left). Fig. 8 . Notes :— Grisebach & Schenk (1852: 315) published this taxon collected during the trip “ Iter Hungaricum anno 1852 susceptum ” in Transylvania ( Romania ). According to Stafleu & Cowan (1976: 1007) , most of the type specimens of Grisebach are deposited in GOET, where he was director of the botanical garden in Göttingen from 1875. The place of origin of Sempervivum patens is located in the region of Banat ( Romania ) “ auf Kalkfelsen über den Herkulesbädern, z. B. bei der Schwitzhöhle 2500’ [on limestone rocks above Băile Herculane, for example near the cave Grota cu Aburi, 762 m ].” This locality seems to be nearly the same as that of S. heuffelii (at the neighbouring cave Grota Haiducilor; see above). The herbarium specimen GOET 002328 was identified as the original material for S. patens . It bears the original label with Grisebach’s handwriting, including descriptive notes on morphology and the note “ cf. S. marmor . [ S. marmoreum Griseb. ]”. Later note “ flores ut in Jovisbarba ” led to the first identification “ Sempervivum hirtum L.?”. Finally Grisebach crossed out the adjective “ hirtum ” and added “ patens m. [mihi]”. Grisebach & Schenk (1852: 315) considered their new species as being intermediate between S. hirtum and S. soboliferum , which might be the reason for his former identification. The specimen GOET 002328 consists of one whole plant with the rosette and inflorescence, and another fragment with just an inflorescence and several fragments of separated rosette leaves. The whole plant on the left is selected here as the lectotype of S. patens .
