Fig. 5A–C Diagnosis. Gynapteromyia costaricensis belongs to the species with simple hair-shaped translucent sensilla on both the flagellomeres (Fig. C) and palpi (Fig. B). Male genitalic characters peculiar to this species are as follows (Fig. A). The conspicuously narrow tegmen has only slightly protruding corners apically (↓); the protrusions of the medial gonocoxal bridges are distinct, rounded and covered with very dense, large microtrichia (↓); and the elongate gonostylus is equipped with a long, subapically slightly broadened tooth, which is perpendicular to the gonostylar body (↓). Females of this species are not known. FIGURE 5A–C. Gynapteromyia costaricensis , male. A: Genitalia, ventral (holotype). B: Palpus and labella, lateral (holotype). C: Fourth flagellomere, lateral (paratype). Scales 0.05 mm. Tr sens = translucent sensillum, tr sut = transverse suture. Other male characters. Body length 1.8–2.1 mm . Head. Genal setae 3–7. Eye bridge 3(–4) ommatidia long dorsally. Scape with 1–2 setae. Fourth flagellomere (Fig. C) with neck and node equally long; node with dense crenulate whorl medially, microtrichia dense basally, sparse elsewhere. Palpus (Fig. B) clearly shorter than head height, 3 segments, outline somewhat varying, first and second segments with translucent sensilla. Wing length / width 2.5. Membrane around Rs with sparse or no setae. Vein btv setose. CuA extending to, or fading out before wing margin. Legs with narrow scales in addition to setae. Genitalia (Fig. A). Gonocoxae: ventral emargination deep, broadened basally; ventral bridge unsetose, with distinct transverse suture; anterior processes of apodemes thick, about as long as distance separating them. Gonostylus 2.6 times longer than wide, slightly tapered towards apex. Tegmen blunt-ended; apodemes large. Etymology.
