This new genus is monotypic, Carinophallus ornata being the sole described species. This species is reported from scattered locations in southern and central Africa, and also in India ( Belk & Brtek, 1995 ). Detailed morphological and molecular analyses should be conducted to compare the African and Eurasian populations to determine whether they are truly conspecific. This genus is separated from all other thamnocephalid genera by the form of the male genitalia (described above), which is unique in that the penes each have a large triangular carina on the rigid basal portions. The eversible distal portion of the penes are unique in the spinal arrangements, however, this distal portion is similar in form to the eversible penes of the new world genus Thamnocephalus .
