Ophrys arachnites
(Linnaeus) Linnaeus
,
Flora Anglica
: 23. 1754
,
nom. inval.
Type not relevant.
Current name:
Ophrys arachnites
(L.) Mill.
(
Orchidaceae
).
Note:
Britten (in
J. Bot.
47, Suppl. 1909; 50: 312-314. 1912) argued that this apparent novelty results from a typographic error for the previously published
O. insectifera
var.
arachnites
L. (1753)
. Stearn (
Introd.
Ray's
Syn. Meth. Stirp. Brit.
(Ray Soc. ed.): 42-68. 1973) evidently agreed as he did not list the name as new. However, Rothmaler (in
Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg.
49: 280. 1941) did accept
O. arachnites
as a new combination. He has been followed by Greuter (in
Candollea
44: 566. 1989) who, however, treated the name as a
nomen dubium et confusum.
