Comment:
R. capensis
was described by
Lichtenstein (1823)
in the doublet register. Two additional specimens (donated by Krebs 1822/1823, and by Mund & Maire 1818/1819) had been considered as “surplus” and may have been sold to an unknown collection. No
holotype
was designated, thus the remaining
three specimens
of the original series are
syntypes
. Karl Koopman examined these specimens and concluded that ZMB 376 and ZMB 378 are
Rhinolophus clivosus
Cretzschmar 1828
and only the juvenile specimen ZMB 377 represents the species
R. capensis
. For nomenclatural stability we designate ZMB 377 as
lectotype
.
