Diagnosis.
Similar to
Callaspidia notata
since
C. aberrans
has scutum coriaceous with faint transverse or rugose carinae, stronger between notauli and in
C. notata
the scutum coriaceous, with weak transverse carinae. But the lateral surface of pronotum is strongly rugose and weakly to strongly coriaceous in
C. aberrans
while in
C. notata
it is coriaceous dorsally and weakly carinated transversally on basal half.
Redescription.
Length.
Female
3.20 to 3.60 mm
.; male
3.10 to 3.50 mm
.
Coloration
. Metanotum dark brown to black. Remaining parts orange to nearly black (see Comments section of this species).
FIGURE 1.
Head of
Callaspidia aberrans
: (a) frontal view and (b) dorsal vision.
Head.
Frons slightly rugose, weakly coriaceous, frontal carina present but fairly weak. Lateral frontal carina conspicuous, straight or sinuate and slightly divergent, space between it and compound eye weakly coriaceous, with some transverse carinae. Vertex, in dorsal view, with two large and deep cells, which can have one weak longitudinal carina inside, sometimes weakly coriaceous; vertex posterior nearly smooth to weakly rugose. Gena, in lateral view, rounded behind compound eye, transversely carinated and shining. Occiput shining, with transverse carinae.
Mesosoma.
Lateral surface of pronotum strongly rugose and weakly to strongly coriaceous, sometimes with weak to strong transverse carinae basally. Scutum coriaceous and with faint transverse or rugose carinae, sometimes stronger between notauli. Parascutal sulcus smooth, shining, with some weak transverse carinae inside. Median ridge and antero-admedial lines blunt, convergent, reaching 1/4 to 1/3 scutum length. Median ridge stronger than antero-admedial lines. Median mesoscutal furrow fairly narrow, long, with transverse carinae inside; notauli weakly coriaceous, with few transverse carinae inside. Mesosoma, in lateral view, usually straight. Interfoveal line as prominent as lateral margins of scutellum, although sometimes prominent (seen in lateral view). Propodeal carinae very strong and wide, slightly but clearly bent. Central area of propodeum with short transverse carinae at sides.
Wings.
Ocasionally slightly yellowish. R1 absent. R2 weakly curved.

Comments.
Kieffer (1901a)
named it ‘aberrans’ on account of its not presenting antero-admedial lines; however, after observing the
type
material, it has been shown to have the antero-admedial lines. The
C. aberrans
and
C. kozlovi
type
material have different coloration patterns:
—Coloration of
C. aberrans
type
: Head mostly black or dark brown. Antenna and mandibulae orange. Lateral faces of pronotum orange basally, orange to black dorsally. Anterior surface of pronotum mostly orange. Mesosoma dark brown, median mesoscutal furrow and parascutal sulcus lighter. Mesopleura orange. Scutellum mostly orange. Propodeum dark brown, propodeal carinae, nucha, petiole and leg orange.
—Coloration of
C. kozlovi
type
: Head black, mandibulae light brown apically. Antenna medium brown basally, lighter towards distal antennomeres. Scutum black except for tegulae, part of scutellar foveae, propodeal carinae, nucha and metanotum, which are lighter. Metanotum dark except for anterior part of petiole lighter. Leg brown, anterior proleg and mesoleg lighter than metaleg.
We believe that these coloration differences are not enough for separating these specimens as different species.
