Acroneuria henana
sp. nov.
(
Figs. 1–5
)
Adult habitus
(
Figs. 1
a–1b). Large sized species, general color dark brown. Head distinctly patterned, ocellar triangle with distinct black marking, M-shaped anterolateral extensions between yellowish M-line and tentorial callosities. Frons forward of M-line dark brown. Occipital area yellowish, medially with a pair of sloping brown bars extending along posterolateral areas of tentorial callosities and posterior ocelli. Antennal scape and pedicel dark brown, flagellum brown. Maxillary palpi brown and labial palpi black. Compound eyes black. Triocellate, anterior ocellus smaller. The distance between the two posterior ocelli as wide as that between ocelli and inner margin of compound eyes. Head wider than pronotum. Pronotum subquadrate, disc dark brown, with prominent rugosities. Legs dark brown except femorotibial joint darker. Wings membrane brownish, veins brown.
Male
(
Figs. 1c
,
2
). Length of body
28.3–31.2 mm
. Forewing length
23.2–27.3 mm
. Hindwing
20.8–23.4 mm
. Abdominal segments 1–8 unmodified. Sternum 9 with a large smooth oval hammer anterior to the typical sclerotized posterior edge. Tergum 9 with two close triangular patches of sensilla basiconica. Tergum 10 with larger patches of sensilla basiconica, located laterally to longitudinal median bald area. Paraproct hooked and bent upward and backward, in lateral and caudal views rod-like, tip with an acute ventral spine.
Aedeagus (
Fig. 3
). Mostly membranous, globular in shape, everted sac tubular with longitudinal and transverse wrinkles, with a slender apex bag-like nearly as long as wide of tubular structure; sclerotized areas covered with spinules present subapically and dorsally interrupted.
Female
(
Figs. 4
a–4c). Length of body
33.2 mm
. Forewing length
28.8 mm
, hindwing length
25.1 mm
. Generally similar to males. Subgenital plate large and subquadrate, posterolateral corners rounded, with triangular posteromedian notch, posterior margin extending and overlapping anterior 1/3 of sternum 9. Genital opening nearly as wide as the subgenital plate.
Vagina elongate (
Figs. 4
c–4f), about
4X
as long as wide, mostly membranous, dorsally, apex with median depression and lateral ridges, in apical view with W-shaped wrinkles.
Egg
(
Fig. 5
). 439–471 μm long and 305–323 μm wide (N=3). Conical with a slight constriction near anterior end. Cross section round. Collar probably vestigial, covered by simple anchor. Chorion dark brown, collar end smooth but the remaining ⅔ with FCIs and punctations. 3–6 sessile micropyles occur near anterior end, sometimes in irregular row and intervals.

Etymology
. The new species is named after the
type
locality,
Henan Province
of
China
.
Distribution
.
China
(
Henan Province
).
Remarks
. The new species is most similar to
A. multiconata
from
Shaanxi Province
of northwestern
China
and
A. morsei
from
Sichuan Province
of southwestern
China
. The adult of
A. henana
can be distinguished by the distinct M-shaped head pattern. The description by
Du (2000)
of
A. morsei
indicated a “mask-like” head pattern.
Acroneuria multiconata
has pale occipital area, whereas in
A. henana
the occipital area has a pair of sloping brown bars. The patch of sensilla basiconica of tergum
9 in
new species is triangular and that area in
A. multiconata
transversely subquadate. The female subgenital plate of
A. multiconata
has a shallow triangular posteromedial notch, whereas in
A. henana
notch is wider and deeper.
