Oxathridia roraimae
Gilmour, 1963: 8
.
Type locality
—
Holotype
female:
Brazil
,
Roraima
: Mt.
Roraima
(Philipp Camp) (
AMNH
).
Distribution—
Brazil
(
Roraima
).
Remarks.
According to
Gilmour (1963)
: “Locality:
BRAZIL
: Mt.
Roraima
, Philipp Camp (Alt.
5.400 ft.
) (
10. XI.1927
) (Acc. 29780, Tate Nº 17)”; and “[Note:? BRITISH GUIANA—The data given above is that on the labels, but Mt.
Roraima
is generally considered, I believe, to be in Brisith Guiana].” Evidently, Gilmour was wrong because Mount
Roraima
is located in three countries: Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana. However, most of the mount is located in Venezuela. According to the maps from
Tate (1930
,
1932
), Philipp Camp is in Venezuela and not in Brazil. And, according to
Tate (1930)
: “Above Paulo three camps were established: Philipp and Rondon Camps, named for the Rondon Commision, and Summit Camp.” Tate was with General Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon on Mount
Roraima
in 1927, when he was establishing Brazilian borders in the region (
Tate 1928
): “Furthermore, we had been greatly assisted by the “free entry” accorded us by the Brazilian officials at
Para
and by our pleasant association, later on our journey into the interior, with General Candido Mariano Rondon and his staff of officers, with whom we traveled to the base of the mountain that was our goal.” It is not possible to know the reason because the label indicates “Brazil” (perhaps because the camp was established by Rondon). However, accepting that the specimen was collected in Philipp Camp, the correct country is Venezuela, and not Brazil or Guyana.
