From the Greek tetragonos (square) and dere (neck, by extension pronotum), alluding to the shape of the pronotum (" corselet ... plus ou moins carre ") of adults of the 16 species Dejean had before him [masculine]. Diversity. About 75 species (Lorenz 2005: 453) arrayed in two subgenera, Tetragonoderus s.str. with about 35 species in the Old World and Crossonychus for the Western Hemisphere species. Identification. Lindroth (1969a: 1010) included a key to four of the five species found in North America.
