Ecology: —Common; terrestrial in arid regions, often covering the ground in overgrazed dry forests, also on and among rocks; to 3700 m . Notes: —Leafy stems generally more slender than in S. peruviana and more bluish gray. The leaf bases are often decurrent on upper side of stems, and leaf tips are not curled when dry.
