Distribution and ecology:
—Endemic to the mountains of
Costa Rica
and adjacent
Panama
. It is locally distributed in humid montane forests at
1500–2200 m
, growing in open thickets on hillsides, on roadbanks, and on eroded slopes. Often co-occurs with
S. retroflexus
.
