Anastrepha tinctobasis belongs to the dentata species group as indicated by the weak denticles of the eversible membrane and the extremely narrow, poorly defined aculeus tip, with the extreme apex sagittate. It differs from the other species of the dentata species group by the following combination of characters: C-band and S-band entirely fused basal to crossvein r-m (cells br and bm entirely orange, although fainter in the latter cell); the marginal hyaline area in cell r 1 with its apex aligned with r-m; and the terminalia extremely long (oviscape 15.5 mm long). Description. Mostly yellow to orange. Setae orange brown to red brown. Head: Yellow to orange except brown ocellar tubercle. 3–4 frontal setae; 2 orbital setae, posterior seta well developed. Ocellar seta weak, 1.5 times as long as ocellar tubercle. Facial carina, in profile, straight or concave on dorsal two-thirds. Antenna not extended to ventral facial margin. Palpus in lateral view dorsally curved, evenly setulose. Thorax ( Fig. 2 ): Mostly yellow to orange, most of scutum orange, darker on postsutural part between white sublateral vittae, at posterior margin between dorsocentral and intra-alar lines and along scuto-scutellar suture diffusely red brown; with following areas white to pale yellow: postpronotal lobe and lateral margin of scutum bordering it; medial scutal vitta, ovoid posteriorly, extending laterally beyond midpoint between acrostichal and dorsocentral setae; sublateral scutal vitta from transverse suture to posterior margin, including base of intra-alar seta; scutellum except extreme base; dorsal margins of anepisternum and katepisternum; katepimeron; and most of anatergite and katatergite. Subscutellum and mediotergite entirely orange. Mesonotum 4.63 mm long. Postpronotal lobe, notopleuron, scutum and scutellum entirely microtrichose; scutal setulae yellow to orange, red brown on lateral margin. Chaetotaxy typical for genus. Katepisternal seta small and weak, orange, less than one-third length of anepisternal seta. Legs: Entirely yellow to orange. Wing ( Fig. 4 ): Length 11.62 mm , width 4.58 mm , ratio 2.54. Apex of vein R 1 at 0.57 wing length, proximal to level of anterior end of crossvein r-m. Cell c 1.17 times as long as pterostigma; pterostigma 4.34 times as long as wide. Vein R 2+3 not sinuous. Crossvein r-m at 0.68 distance from bm-m to dm-m on vein M 1 . Vein M 1 strongly curved apically; cell r 4+5 at apex 0.84 times as wide as at level of dm-m, 0.73 times as wide as maximum subapical width. Cell cu a with distal lobe moderately long, length of cu a 1.67 times as long as anterior margin, lobe 0.97 times as long as vein CuA+CuP. Wing pattern mostly orange. C-band mostly orange, cell c without hyaline area, pterostigma slightly darker orange brown, distal margin in cells r 1 and r 2+3 partially narrowly faintly brown; node of vein Rs with small, irregular brown spot. C-band and S-band completely fused basally, filling all of cell br, basal part of cell dm, and more faintly, cell bm; hyaline marginal spot in cell r 1 subtriangular, with apex aligned with crossvein r-m. Basal half of S-band mostly orange, posterodistal margin mostly narrowly faint brown, more broadly in cell m 4 , without distinct incision in cell m 4 ; distal section almost entirely orange; medium width, but broader at apex of vein R 2+3 where as wide as cell r 2+3 , narrowly separated from apex of vein M 1 , without marginal hyaline areas; hyaline area proximal to apex of band extended almost to vein R 2+3 . V-band with proximal arm brown in cell m 4 and on margins in cells dm and m 4 ; very broadly connected to S-band along vein R 4+5 ; on posterior margin extended only 0.33 distance to apex of vein CuA+CuP; distal arm diffuse orange, incomplete, extended only slightly anterior to vein M 1 . Abdomen: Mostly orange, without brown markings. Female terminalia: Oviscape 10.70 mm long, 2.31 times as long as mesonotum, straight in lateral view; mostly dark orange, gradually darkening to dark red brown on distal two-fifths; spiracle at basal 0.14. Eversible membrane ( Fig. 10 ) with dorsobasal denticles all small and fine. Aculeus not dissected; tip ( Figs. 11–12 ) 0.15 mm long (difficult to measure, sclerotized inner margin distal to cloacal opening poorly defined), 0.02 mm wide, 7.5 times as long as wide; in ventral view gradually tapered, distal 0.33 sagittate and finely serrate (extreme end of tip of holotype broken); 0.02 mm wide in lateral view, 1.0 times ventral width. Spermathecae not examined. Distribution. Anastrepha tinctobasis is known only from Ecuador ( Morona-Santiago ). Biology. The host plants and other aspects of the biology of this species are unknown. Type data. Holotype (CNREE-AGROCALIDAD-LOJA E11-152285), ECUADOR : Morona-Santiago : Carmelo , 1.78437°S 78.0604°W , 1131 m , 14 Sep 2016 , H. Chulde. Etymology. The name of this species is a noun in apposition derived from the Latin “tinctus” and “basis”, in reference to the mostly infuscated basal half of the wing. Comments. This species belongs to the dentata species group.
