Euphorbia maculata
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
1
:
455. 1753
.
"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 3509.
Lectotype
(Croizat in
Webbia
17: 191. 1962): Herb. Linn. No. 630.11 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Euphorbia maculata
L.
(
Euphorbiaceae
).
Note:
Wheeler (in
Contr. Gray Herb.
127: 75. 1939;
Rhodora
43: 143, pl. 668B. 1941;
Rhodora
62: 134-141. 1960) attempted to show that 630.4 (LINN) was the correct type. The papers which contributed to the extensive debate that followed are listed by Croizat (in
Webbia
17: 187-188. 1962), and include Fosberg (in
Rhodora
48: 197-200. 1946), who illustrated one of the LINN specimens and the cited Plukenet plate. However, 630.4 has been shown to be the type of
E. hypericifolia
L., and Croizat
designated 630.11 (LINN) as the type of
E. maculata
.
This choice has been accepted by authors such as Fosberg & Mazzeo (in
Castanea
30: 199. 1965), Burch (in
Rhodora
68: 156-160. 1966) and
Benedi
& Orell (in
Collect. Bot.
(
Barcelona
) 21: 31. 1992).
