C
—Dorsal habitus.
D
—Metatibia and metabasitarsus. Scale bars: 1 mm.
Diagnosis:
Integument predominantly black. Clypeus with abundant silvery decumbent hair on the lower paraocular area, and sparse and slightly brown on the upper half of the face. Mandible dark brown in the basal half and reddish-brown in the apical half, with five teeth. Clypeus and scape with setae of length approximately
0.14 mm
(about 0.9× the diameter of the scape). Clypeus with wide distance between the epistomal suture and inferior tangent of the antennal socket, approximately 0.7× the scape diameter. Scape reddish-brown dorsally, and slightly brownish ventrally and basally on the sixth. Malar area approximately 0.8× the diameter of the scape. Carina post-ocellar strongly elevated. Vertex with setae of length approximately
0.22 mm
, about 1.5× the diameter of the scape. Mesoscutum with setae of length approximately
0.22 mm
, about 1.5× the scape diameter, scutellum with longer setae (
0.38 mm
), approximately 2.5× the scape diameter. Metatibia relatively narrow and shallow, approximately 3.1× longer than wide. Metabasitarsus with anterior and posterior margins subparallel, apex slightly concave. Wing membranes hyaline. Veins C, R and M+Cu slightly darkened, the other veins and pterostigma brownish. Metasoma elongated, approximately 2× longer than wide. Total body length approximately
5.3 mm
.

Biological note:
T. recursa
builds underground nests, and its nest defense behavior is not aggressive (
Rasmussen & Camargo 2008
). According to
Jarau
et al.
(2003)
, this species has a facultative necrophagous behavior.

Comments:
Our investigations indicate that
Trigona
(
Nostotrigona
)
recursa
is not widely distributed in the Brazilian Amazon. As referred to earlier, it is possible that specimens reported in the literature as
Trigona recursa
Smith
in the Brazilian Amazon are actually several undescribed species, as corroborated by
Camargo
et al.
(2013)
.
