Marine and brackish waters ( Romero-Berny 2018 ); benthic; depth: 0.6–100 m ( 2–328 ft ) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Amezcua Linares 1996 ). Extensive molecular analyses of the species in the family Balistidae strongly suggests that this species should be called Balistes naufragium Jordan and Starks, 1895 ( McCord and Westneat 2016 ).
