This species displays a great deal of phenotypic plasticity throughout its range, and hybridizes readily wth other sympatric species of Atriplex , complicating taxonomic delimitation ( Stutz 1978 ). Previously recorded in the nearby San Rafael Swell as Atriplex cuneata A. Nelson ( Harris 1983 ), here we follow Welsh (2003) in treating this taxon at the subspecies level.
