Turcinoemacheilus
Bănărescu et Nalbant, 1964
Type
species:
Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi
Bănărescu et Nalbant, 1964
Emended diagnosis:
This genus can be distinguished from all the other nemacheilid genera in the following combination of characters: preethmoidei-I absent; four cylindrical pectoral-bony radials; bony air-bladder capsule with wide sheet-like bony fringe, no free posterior chamber in abdominal cavity; anus positioned mid-way between pelvic-fin insertion and anal-fin origin; mature males with cheeks thickened and with epidermal tubercles homogeneously distributed on snout.
Remarks:
This peculiar genus having a very disjunct distribution (
Conway
et al.
2011
) can be easily separated from all the other nemacheilids in the region in its anterior position of the anus. Relationship of the genus is unclear (
Bănărescu & Nalbant, 1995
;
Prokofiev, 2009
); however, we found sexual dimorphism of the
Oxynoemacheilus
-
type
in the specimens described below, which may indicate that these genera are phylogenetically close. Resolution of this problem will be presented in a forthcoming paper.
