Figs. 9–12 Diagnosis . Oxyethira longipenis sp. nov. is readily distinguished by segment IX extremely elongate, reaching anteriorly the segment IV. The new species can also be distinguished by winding dorsal processes associated with segment IX and by phallus membranous and very elongate. Description . Male . Length 1.8–2.0 mm (n = 5). General color, in alcohol, brown. Antennae stramineous, with 25 segments each, covered with short dark brown setae; frontal area of the head with dark brown setae. Wings covered with long dark brown setae; legs pale, with short dark brown setae. Male genitalia . Sternum VII excavated mesally and with brush of long setae ( Figs. 10, 11 ). Segment VIII, in dorsal view, slightly excavated ( Fig. 9 ); in ventral view, divided mesally into two setose lobes, left lobe slightly shorter than right lobe ( Fig. 10 ); in lateral views, with posterolateral margins rounded and covered with long setae ( Fig. 11 ). Segment IX asymmetrical and extremely elongate, extending anteriorly into segment IV ( Figs. 9, 10, 12 ); apicodorsally represented by pair of long winding processes, produced apically and both curved to left side ( Fig. 9 ). Segment X indistinct, membranous. Subgenital plate with distal arms fused ( Fig. 10 ). Bilobed processes present, each with spine-like apical seta. Inferior appendages apparently absent. Phallus tubular and extremely elongate, slightly sclerotized, following segment IX internally ( Fig. 12 ). Female . Unknown. Remarks . This species shares the long apicodorsal processes of segment IX with both O . culebra Holzenthal & Harris, 1992 and O . bidentata Mosely, 1934 . However, Oxyethira longipenis sp. nov. has segment IX very elongate, extending anteriorly to segment IV, whereas O . bidentata and O . culebra have segment IX extending anteriorly to segment VII and VI, respectively. The new species also differs from these species by absence of the inferior appendages and by presence of the subgenital plate, which has distal arms fused. Holotype male: BRAZIL : Amazonas: Manaus, tributary to Rio Cuieiras, 02°42’25.1”S 60°22’28.2”W , 19.vii.2004 , J.L. Nessimian & L. Fidelis, light trap ( INPA ). Paratypes : Same data as holotype , 4 males ( 2 in INPA and 2 in DZRJ ). Etymology. From Latin longi (long) and penis (phallus or penis), in allusion to the extremely long phallus.
