Protearomyia iberica
sp. nov.
Description. Male
:
Head
. Eyes bare. Frons matt black with grey dusting increasing anteriorly, 9 frontal setulae increasing in length anteriorly at most one third length of orbital seta, a scattering of approximately 8 shorter interfrontal setulae. Orbital plate subshining black, bare apart from the orbital seta which is only slightly shorter than the medial vertical seta. Lunule black, without setulae. Anterior genal setulae forming a single row of 6 along mouth edge, all approximately the same length. Antennae entirely black, 1st flagellomere 1.5x longer than deep, with rounded apex. Arista faintly yellowish basally, with microscopic pubescence.
Thorax.
Thoracic dorsum shining black, only slightly dusted anteriorly, covered in setulae approximately one third length of orbital seta. Thoracic sclerites also shining black apart from some light dusting on the lower part of the katepisternum. Anepisternum with no apparent anterodorsal setae, four posterior setae arranged in a vertical row, remainder of sclerite with approximately 14 scattered, shorter setulae. Katepisternum bare apart three setae arranged laterally along dorsal margin, posterior two equally strong, the anterior weaker, sclerite otherwise bare. One seta on proepimeron and one on proepisternum. Scutellar disc slightly dusted, contrasting with shining thorax, four strong marginal setae. Calypteres white with dark fringe. Wings slightly whitish, veins yellow. Legs entirely black, fore and hind metatarsi with dark setulae ventrally.
Abdomen.
Tergite 5 3.5x length of t4, apically with marginal comb of 8–10 short stiff setulae on each side.
Male terminalia
(
Figs.1–6
). Epandrium in lateral view (
Fig. 1
) approximately twice as wide as high, ventral lobe (
Fig.1
: VL) large, almost square with eight long setulae posteroventrally, inner surface with a row of three setulae anteriorly. Outer margin of surstylus almost smooth, only a few slight serrations and a slightly serrated anterior projection, two similar sized prensisetae present posteroventrally, one lying slightly dorsal to the other. Cerci small and fleshy, only slightly extending beyond shell of epandrium, at their apices fused to the hypoproct. Hypoproct (
Fig. 3
: H) forming a long, thin, curved sclerotized rod which reaches from near the inner base of the surstyli down through the centre of the epandrium to emerge posteriorly at the ventral margin of the cerci. In posterior view the hypoproct broadening apically, with two small lateral projections, each slightly serrated at the tip and two larger, rectangular apical projections also serrated on their apical margins (
Fig. 3
). Phallus (
Figs. 4
(P), 5 & 6); basal plate square, twice as wide as apical section, with obvious projecting corners, apical section sinuous and lying almost at right angles to the basiphallus (
Fig. 6
). Phallic guide (
Fig. 4
: PG) in lateral view with a pair of large curved ventral process arising at base (
Fig. 5
) in anterior view, these gradually taper towards a blunt, rounded apex (
Fig. 4
).
Measurements:
Body length
3.5 mm
Wing length
3.25 mm
.
Differential diagnosis:
This is a dark species with dark fringes to the calypteres and dark ventral setulae on the tarsomeres. The shape of the apex of the hypoproct distinguishes it from other species with a square ventral lobe to the epandrium.
