Female holotype from Chiapas, Puebla Nueva Camp, Mexico [ 16°08’51.36’’N , 92°24’45.62’’W ], 19.XI.1953 , E. I. Schlinger ( CAS 9046686). Etymology. The specific name is a patronym in honor of Evert Irving Schlinger, who collected the type specimen. Diagnosis. The female of Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. resembles those of T. palictlus Carico, 1976 by the long lateral lobes (LL) ( Carico, 1976: 76, figs. 28, 29 ), but can be distinguished by the large and elongated scape-like projection of the middle field (MF) ( Fig. 4 ). Chelicerae reddish-brown, bristly ( Fig. 3 ); promargin and retromargin of fang furrow with three teeth equidistant and equal in size. Sternum yellow, bristly; 3.56 long, 3.73 wide. Venter light brown, scattered setae. Epigynum with large, wide and projected middle field (MF) ( Fig. 4 ) and enlarged lateral lobes (LL) ( Fig. 4 ). Spermathecae (S) short and rounded ( Fig. 5 ) and coiled copulatory ducts (CD) ( Fig. 5 ). Distribution. Mexico ( Fig 1 ). FIGURE 1. Distribution of specimens of Tinus F. O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1901 in North and Central America treated in this paper. FIGURES 2, 3. Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. , female habitus (2 dorsal view, 3 frontal view). Arrow indicates grouped dark brown bristles. FIGURES 4, 5. Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. , female epigynum (4 ventral view, 5 dorsal view). (CD, copulatory duct, FD, fertilization duct, LL = lateral lobe, S = head of spermatheca). Note. Tinus schlingeri sp. nov. was initially thought to be the female of Tinus oaxaca Carico, 2008 as both species were similar in size and colour pattern. However, close examination of the holotype of T. oaxaca revealed distinct differences in the colour pattern of carapace and abdomen. In the original description of T. oaxaca , the dorsal prosoma presents an uniformly brown median band ( Carico 2008 ), whereas T. schlingeri sp. nov. has a lighter and vivid pattern. Also, the dorsal femora and patellae of T. oaxaca have an “indistinct pattern” ( Carico 2008 ), but T. schlingeri sp. nov. presents distinct dark patches. Also, the only known specimen of T. oaxaca was collected from Oaxaca , Mexico , which is about 470 km from where T . schlingeri sp. nov. was collected and in a different drainage basin ( Fig. 1 ).
