E. makliniana is distinctive in the genus Epicauta for the elytra densely covered by ocher setae. Tan & Deng (1993) described E. mojiangensis , and pointed out that it was allied to E. maklini (= E. makliniana ), but differed from it by the different color pattern of the elytra (the latter without three ocher longitudinal strips on each elytron). However, E. makliniana also has these longitudinal strips, but was described by Haag-Rutenberg (1880) in a different way: “Flügeldecken nicht viel breiter als der Thorax, 3mal so lang als zusammen breit, nach hinten sich verbreiternd, bräunlich, dicht ockergelb behaart, mit Ausnahme der Spitze, der Schultern und eines öfter undeutlichen Flecks neben dem Schildchen; von Sculptur ist kaum etwas zu bemerken”. For this reason, we considered E. mojiangensis and E. makliniana as synonyms.
