Cuscuta americana
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
1
: 124. 1753
.
"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 1024.
Lectotype
(Engelmann in
Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis
1: 482. 1859): Herb. Linn. No. 170.5 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Cuscuta americana
L.
(
Cuscutaceae
).
Note:
Believing none of the original elements to correspond with usage, Reveal & al. (in
Taxon
39: 360. 1990) proposed the name for conservation with a conserved type. The Committee for Spermatophyta, however, ruled that Engelmann had formally chosen (the post-1753) 170.5 (LINN) as
lectotype
, and (in
Taxon
42: 876. 1993)
"recommends...
that this typification be accepted". This rendered the conservation proposal unnecessary and it was not recommended.
