Diagnosis.
Head black, vertex rectangular and smooth, postclypeus inflated and convex in profile, with one low longitudinal carina; thorax, legs and abdomen dark black; tegmina sanguineous red, with apical cells on apical plexus of vein black.
Remarks.
Mahanarva
(
Mahanarva
)
rubripennis
is transferred to the subgenus
Ipiranga
because this species has the same tegminal proportion as the species of
Ipiranga
, the postclypeus is convex and not angulated as in
Mahanarva
(
Mahanarva
)
, and the rostrum is short, not reaching the mesocoxae. In addition, the shape of the genitalia is closer to the species included in
Ipiranga
than to those included in
Mahanarva
. A cladistic analysis of
Kanaima
by Paladini
et al.
(2008) showed that
Mahanarva
(
Ipiranga
)
rubripennis
is nested inside the clade of
Ipiranga
, consistent with this classification.
