Begonia

Australes
was treated as synonymous with

until it was reinstated by

on the basis of phylogenetic data. The section was recently revised by
Tebbitt (2020)
and includes the majority of tuberous, caulescent species of Andean
Begonia
with large flowers and bifid styles.
Begonia

is most diverse in
Bolivia
and northwest
Argentina
, and we recognise three species from central and southern
Peru
.
