Eucosma paregoria is superficially similar to E. sombreana Kearfott , a sympatric species that bores in lower stems and roots of Helianthus (Asteraceae) . Both species lack distinct fasciae, although the median fascia is faintly darker in E. paregoria . Eucosma paregoria is distinct from E. sombreana and other Eucosma species by having a forewing with orange scales in the apical third surrounding a distinct ocellus that is bordered on the costal side by a patch of dark brown scales with white tips. Both species, as well as, E. haydenae Wright , have a valval neck with a median flange, but the cucullus of E. sombreana is subquadrate without a dorsally projecting area, and the flange of E. paregoria is wider than that of E. haydenae . In addition, E. paregoria has socii that are tapered distally, whereas E. haydenae has socii that are subequal in width for most of their length. The female of E. paregoria has a lamella postvaginalis that is widened posteriorly, whereas the lamella postvaginalis is uniform in width in E. sombreana and E. haydenae . Description . Head : Vertex brownish orange, becoming orange white near frons, scales without pale apices; second segment of labial palpus yellowish white or orange gray, with scattered light brown scales near middle, distal scales light brown, extending ventrally beyond apex of third segment, third segment pale brown, 0.33–0.37 length of second ( 1 ♂ , 1 g ). Forewing ( Fig. 1 ) length 8.3–10.8 mm ; costal fold length 0.44–0.47 forewing length ( 8♂ ), costal fold enclosing grayish brown hair pencil, inner surface of dorsal flap of fold with small, gray, sex scales; outer margin of wing membrane straight between apex and Cu1; basal half of wing concolorous with mesonotum, pale brown intermixed with variable amounts of orange with purple iridescence when viewed at angle to light, brown intermixed with orange forming a rounded spot near middle of inner margin; median fascia faintly defined, without distinct margins, dark brown or brownish orange, extending from middle of costa to tornus; ocellus distinct, consisting of two, transverse silvery bars, with basal bar nearly twice length of apical bar, and silvery spot near tornus, enclosing orange area with two or three brown longitudinal lines; peppered scales (individual scales dark brown basally, white apically) forming large spot costad to ocellus and forming wide band on apical margin from apex to tornus, apical third of wing orange on costa; costa with strigulae 5–9 well expressed with a narrow silvery stria originating from each pair. Hindwing uniformly light brown dorsally, paler ventrally, with purple iridescence when viewed at angle to light. Abdomen : Male genitalia ( Fig. 2 ) (n = 2) with uncus reduced to setose, rounded lobe with notch at apex; socii long, pendant, setose from beyond base to apex, tapering in distal fourth; gnathos sclerotized basally, membranous and fused medially; phallus long, tapered, with 17–20 cornuti; anellus closely surrounding base of phallus; medial flanges of caulis fused from juxta to anellus; valve with cucullus well defined by deep ventral incurvation of neck, neck with medial flange projecting ventrally, sacculus ventrally rounded near neck, cucullus with spiniform setae on ventral two-thirds. Two preparations examined. Female genitalia ( Fig. 3 ) (n = 1) with sternum VII rounded, rugose anteriorly. Tergum VIII sparsely setose laterally, with row of setae on dorsoposterior margin, scales absent. Papillae anales without deep posterior cleft, moderately setose, facing laterally, ventral faces narrow; lamella postvaginalis with straight posterior margin, concave lateral margins, posterior area and adjacent membrane with about 20 small setae; lamella antevaginalis reduced to narrow, membranous band; ductus bursae short, with sclerotized ring posterior to inception of ductus seminalis; signa flattened, apically rounded, subequal in size.
