Antennae relatively elongate, flagellomere VIII deeply plumose distally, flagellomeres IV–VII all short and approximately equal in length; face bulbous black or yellow with erect, white setae; scutum and scutellum black; male abdomen petiolate; male occiput suffused with black. Redescription . Body length = 10.0– 11.5 mm . Head . Brownish-black and yellow; frons flat, female frons yellow with dark medial furrow; face broadly rounded and bulbous, black (male) or yellow (female), extensive erect, white setae, shorter in female; parafacial yellow with margin of silver pubescence along eye; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, highly carinate in female, not carinate in male; occiput flat, black (male) or yellow (female), covered with white setal pile (longer in male); antenna (length = 3.0 mm) with scape and pedicel and flagellomeres I–III dark yellow with dark microtrichia, flagellomeres IV–VIII black, flagellomeres V–VII relatively short and combined length equal to length of flagellomere III, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 17, flagellomere VIII elongate and deeply plumose with microtrichia. Thorax . Black; scutum with erect, elongate, yellow, setal pile in female, short black setae in male; anepisternum whitish along dorsal and posterior margins (broader in female); scutellum black; coxae black; rest of legs yellow and black, femora yellow apically and basally, tibiae and basitarsi black apically, hind basitarsus white basally; hind tibia and tarsus longer and thicker than other legs; haltere yellow; wing slightly infuscate, venation dark; pterostigma light brown. Abdomen . Male abdomen narrow, petiolate basally, segment 1 equal to width of scutellum with segment 5 widest and equal to width of scutum, black with yellow margin laterally; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed; female abdomen wider, black, with extensive yellow laterally on tergite 1–5. Male genitalia . Epandrium relatively short; gonocoxites quadrangular with claw-like posterolateral processes; gonostylus bilobed and well developed; phallus relatively elongate with medial lobe only slightly longer than lateral lobes. Female genitalia. Not dissected. Comments . Lagenosoma dispar is easily recognised by the extensive dark body colouration, yellow base of the antennae and banded leg pattern. The scutellum is black, rimmed with dark yellow in the female, distinguishing it from the closely related L. propinquum , where the female scutellum is whitish yellow. This species is widely distributed throughout eastern Queensland and New South Wales . Males have been observed in loose swarms at a height of approximately five metres amongst tree foliage. The male syntype is designated here as the lectotype for L. dispar to stabilise the concept of the species. The type of Peratomastix australis was deposited in the Hungarian National Museum and is presumed destroyed by fire in 1956. A neotype is herein designated to stabilise this concept of this species as there has been confusion previously regarding the taxonomic identity of this species.
