Diagnosis.
Ascalaphus abdominalis
is unique among its congeneric species by the well-developed abdominal tergum 4, which has a median dilation in lateral view that is covered with short black setae (
Kimmins 1949
: fig. 3). Apart from the above characters, the male differs from the female in that the antennae are slightly angled at the proximal region, and the flagellomeres are basally serrated, while in the female they are straight, i.e., neither angled nor serrated.
