Battling the un-dead: the status of the Diptera genus-group names originally proposed in Johann Wilhelm Meigen’s 1800 pamphlet Author Evenhuis, Neal L. Author Pape, Thomas text Zootaxa 2017 4275 1 1 74 journal article 32874 10.11646/zootaxa.4275.1.1 02308cb2-2ac2-407f-aa58-b7f5b657fc44 1175-5326 804234 065D531F-1095-4364-906B-EC55CFF9BFD4 49. Potamida [ Potamida ] Meigen, 1800: 22 . CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 [ teste Woodley (2001: 155) ]. Potamida Hendel, 1903: 58 . ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: None. FIRST INCLUDED SPECIES: Stratiomys ephippium Fabricius, 1775 (with Ephippium thoracicum Latreille, 1805 [as “ Ephippium thoracicum Panz. ”] in synonymy) (in Speiser 1905: 406 ). TYPE SPECIES: Stratiomys ephippium Fabricius, 1775 , by subsequent designation ( Speiser 1905: 406 ). CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Potamida Agassiz, 1846 ; junior synonym of Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 . New Synonymy . FAMILY: STRATIOMYIDAE . REMARKS: Potamida was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 22) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1903: 58) treated Potamida as a synonym of Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 , thereby proposing Potamida in synonymy, but he did not include any species. Speiser (1905: 406) was the first after Meigen (1800) to treat Potamida as valid, which makes the name available from Hendel (1903) . Speiser (1905: 406) also included the first species, Stratiomys ephippium Fabricius, 1775 , designating it as the type species, which is thus the type species by subsequent designation. Stratiomys ephippium Fabricius, 1775 is currently treated in Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 [ teste Woodley (2001: 155) ], which makes Potamida Hendel, 1903 a junior synonym of Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 , n. syn . Melville (1960: 35) gave the “counterpart” for Potamida as Chippium Latreille, 1802 . Melville also indicated that Latreille (1804: 341) emended Chippium to Ephippium . Chippium is a lapsus and the correction in a subsequent volume of the same series by Latreille [in this case Latreille (1804) ] is allowed by the ICZN Code as a correction of an original spelling and Ephippium is to be considered the available name [see also Woodley (2001: 156) ]. Melville’s (1960) placing Chippium [= Ephippium ] as a “counterpart” of Potamida is technically correct as it is a synonym of and an older name than Clitellaria Meigen, 1802 , but Ephippium Latreille, 1802 is preoccupied by Ephippium Röding, 1798 . Thus Clitellaria Meigen, 1803 is the oldest available name for this genus, and we treat it here as the seniormost synonym of Potamida Hendel, 1903 .
