Thegenericname, Mucotergum , isacontractionoftheLatin‘ mucus ’, meaningsecretion, mucusanddischarge, andLatin‘ tergum ’, back, shield, bodyandsur- face, whichrelatestotheexceptionallayeronthedorsalidiosoma. Thegenderisneuter. Differentialdiagnosis. Thenewgenus Mucotergum issimilarto Asetacus Keifer. Itclearlydiffersfrom Asetacus mainlybyhavingallusualsetae, includingbasiventralfemoralseta bv onbothlegpairs, themucus- likecoveronthe prodorsalshieldanddorsalopisthosoma, theuncommonlydarkcolour, and lackoftuberclesofscapularsetae sc . Thesuiteofcharacteristicsusedtodifferentiate Mucotergum appeartobesignificantatgenericlevelbut, likesome othertaxaintheEriophyoidea, thegenericconceptsandseparationofseveral taxaassignedtosubfamilyRhyncaphytoptinaearethoughttobeweakand notbasedonnaturalgroupings ( LINdquIST & AMRINE 1996 ). Sofar, onlytwo eriophyoidmitesareknown, whichproduceclearliquidsecretionontheir body: Hoderusglobulus (Mohanasundaram, 1981) and Hyborhinuskallarensis Mohanasundaram, 1986 (cit. MANSON & GERSON 1996 ). Bothdiptilomiopid speciesweredescribedfromIndia, andbothhavetuberclesofscapularsetae sc andsetae sc . Themucus- likesecretiononprodorsalshieldanddorsalsemi- annuliisanunusualfeatureineriophyoidmites.
