Distribution and habitat.
New Ireland
: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa,
Madagascar
and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern
Japan
and Ogasawara Islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef (
Australia
), Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone; solitary juveniles found among rocks or coral of shallow protected, sometimes turbid reefs,
0–30 m
depth. Marine.
