( Figs. 9–15 , 44 ). Etymology. This species is named after the country of Argentina from which this species was collected and is used as a noun in apposition. Diagnosis. Like Notiothereva bezzii and N. brunnipes in having the frontal setae absent lateral to antennal base; parafacial lacking setae; and the gena with an anterodorsal patch of short, dark setae. It differs from N. bezzii and N. brunnipes in having the halter knob generally dark brown; fore­ and midcoxa with macrosetae yellow to dark yellow; and the posterior margin of male sternite 8 ( Fig. 10 ) deeply emarginate with setae absent medially on posterior margin. Description of holotype male (MEI 106083). Body length 8.2 mm . Head. Length 1.24 mm . Frons pruinescence silver, dense; setae black, elongate, absent lateral to antennal base. Antenna dark brown, pruinescence gray on scape and pedicel, first flagellomere pale brown, darker dorsally, second and third flagellomeres dark brown; antenna/head length 0.65; scape length 0.22 mm , width 0.12 mm , length/width 1.8, scape/ pedicel length 2.2, scape/flagellum width 0.75, setae dark reddish brown, elongate grading into macrosetae; pedicel length 0.10 mm , length/width 0.8, setae dark reddish brown, short; flagellum length 0.49 mm , width 0.16 mm , length/width 3.1, flagellum/scape length 2.2. Parafacial pruinescence whitish gray, dense; setae absent. Maxillary palpus yellow, pruinescence white; length 0.52 mm , length/width 8.7; setae white, elongate. Genal setae white, elongate with small, anterodorsal patch of short, dark brown setae. Occipital setae white, elongate, scattered over all of dorsal surface; macrosetae dark brown, extending in row at end of postocular macrosetae. Thorax. 3 np, 1 sa, 1 pa, 2 dc, 2 sc. Mesonotum dark brown, pruinescence brownish gray, vittae dull brown separated by lines of gray pruinescence; setae dark brown, erect, elongate intermixed with appressed, gold setae which become white laterally and across anterior margin. Postpronotal lobe setae white intermixed with dark brown setae. Cervical sclerite lacking setae. Pleuron pruinescence gray, dense; setae white, elongate on propleuron, anepisternum, katepisternum, laterotergite, and metanepisternum, gold on scutellum. Wing. Membrane opaque, occasionally with faint brown spot at r­m, fork of R4+5, and apical margin of cells bm , br , and dc ; venation pale brown; length 6.2 mm , length/width 2.8; pterostigma dark brown; cell m 3 closed, petiolate. Halter knob generally dark brown (pale yellow occasionally). Legs. Coxa dark reddish brown, pruinescence white, dense; setae white, elongate; apical macrosetae dark yellow, a few dark reddish brown, apical macrosetae on hindcoxa. Femora dark reddish brown, pruinescence white; ventral setae white on fore­ and midfemora; dv 0:0:0, av 3:2:5, pv 0:0:4. Tibiae dark yellowish brown, apex dark reddish brown. Tarsomere 1 dark yellowish brown, apex dark reddish brown; 2–5 dark reddish brown. Abdomen. Cuticle dark reddish brown, pruinescence gray, dense on tergite 1, anteriorly on tergites 2–5, extending posteriorly as posteromedial point, orange brown posteriorly on tergites 2–7 becoming wider on tergites 3–5; dorsal setae white, elongate, appressed on tergite 1 and orange brown areas of tergites 2–7 with dark brown, elongate, appressed setae on dark brown areas; lateral setae white, elongate. Terminalia (MEI 105864). Dark brown. Tergite 8 ( Fig. 9 ) setae dark brown. Sternite 8 ( Fig. 10 ) quadrate, anterior margin broadly rounded, sides rounded; posterior margin deeply emarginate; setae brown, absent medially on posterior margin. Epandrium ( Fig. 9 ) setae dark brown, scattered on posterior third. Cercus ( Fig. 9 ) ending above apex of hypoproct. Hypoproct ( Fig. 9 ) posterior margin rounded to truncate, ending below apex of cercus. Gonocoxite ( Figs. 10–11 ) globular, rounded laterally, tapering apically to broad point, setae dark brown, macrosetae dark brown, setae on inner gonocoxal process dark yellow. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme ( Fig. 12 ) anteromedial projection short, truncate; ventral apodeme ( Fig. 13 ) narrow, tapered anteriorly, not reaching anterior margin of dorsal apodeme; distiphallus dorsal view ( Fig. 12 ) broad basally, tapered posteriorly, with two narrow carinas, basiphallus with median carina; lateral view ( Fig. 14 ) broadly curved ventrally; ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 12 ) anterior third expanded, dark brown, anterior margin rounded. Morphometric variation (n=10). Body length 6.3–8.4, 7.4 mm . Head. Length 0.98–1.30, 1.15 mm . Dark reddish brown, posterior margin of tergites 2–4 dark yellowish brown, pruinescence gray, dense on tergites 1 and 5 and posterolaterally on tergites 2–4; dorsal setae white, erect, elongate on tergite 1, dark brown, appressed on dark brown areas of tergites 2–4, white posterolaterally on tergites 2–4, dark brown on tergites 5–8; lateral setae white, erect on tergites 1–4, dark brown on tergites 5–8. Terminalia (MEI 106032). Furca ( Fig. 15 ) quadrate, sides rounded; length 0.50 mm , width 0.36 mm ; anterolateral projection short. Immature stages . Unknown. Distribution. Notiothereva argentina is known from Argentina ( Fig. 44 ). Habitats and Temporal Phenology. Notiothereva argentina has been hand­netted in large, dry, rocky washes; collected in Malaise traps set in dry hillside ravines, near a wet spot in a wash, in a wash with running water, at the base of a mountain in a wash, and near water in side canyon; and in pan traps set in a side canyon, and set in a wash with some water. The majority of specimens of Notiothereva argentina were collected in November, but specimens have been collected in January, March, September, and October. Specimens Examined. Type specimen.
