STATUS: Unknown, but probable reduction in numbers and range due to overhunting and introduction of L. europaeus ( Palacios et al., 1989 ) . SYNONYMS: Monotypic. COMMENTS: Formerly included in capensis or europaeus ; see Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951) and Petter (1961); but see also Palacios et al. (1989) who provided evidence of their specific distinctness.
