Oberthuerella can be readily distinguished from Xenocynips by having distinct metasomal terga (tergites 3-5) with the inter-tergal sutures not fused. The mesopleuron is also distinctly concave, the concavity forming an oblique, shallow femoral groove; the mesopleural impression is absent and the ventral part of the mesopleuron is without horizontal, linear sculpture; the metatibial spurs are subequal in length, elongate.
