Clematis flammula
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
1
: 544. 1753
.
"Habitat Monspelii, Jenae, inque Rhetiae sepibus." RCN: 4036.
Lectotype
(Brandenburg in Jarvis & al. in
Taxon
54: 469. 2005): [icon] "
Flammula
" in
Dodoens
, Stirp. Hist. Pempt., ed. 2: 404. 1616.
Current name:
Clematis flammula
L.
(
Ranunculaceae
).
Note:
The original elements that contributed to
Linnaeus'
concept of
C. flammula
were taxonomically diverse, and included
C. vitalba
L.
,
C. maritima
L.
, and possibly
C. chinensis
Osbeck
, as well as
C. flammula
.
Qaiser (in Jafri & El-Gadi,
Fl. Libya
108: 5. 1984) designated 712.12 (LINN) as the type but unfortunately this collection is identifiable as
C. vitalba
.
Brandenburg rejected
Qaiser's
typification, on the grounds of conflict of the specimen with the protologue, in favour of a
Dodoens
plate corresponding with usage of the name.
