Western Atlantic—USA (from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico ), Antilles, Venezuela , Suri- name, Brazil (from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul ), and Uruguay ( Melo 1999 ). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to a depth of 130 m . On mud, shell, sand, and Thalassia bottoms ( Melo 1999 ; Almeida et al. 2007 a , b ). Remarks. Mentioned by Smith (1869) and Moreira (1901) as Petrochirus granulatus ( Almeida et al. 2007 b ) . Santos et al. (2016) collected specimens were downstream of the São Francisco River, at the border of Alagoas and Sergipe . Hermit crabs from Petro-UFS inhabiting shells of Xenophora conchyliophora (Born) and Turbinella laevigata Anton. Previous records in Sergipe . Smith (1869) , Coelho et al. (2007) , as P. granulatus , Santos et al. (2016) .
