Among the two recognized tribes, Limnophorini and Coenosiini , only the latter is defined by alleged apomorphies. It was found that the great majority of the examined species representing 35 genera of Coenosiinae possess the prevalent muscid state A4 , in which vein C is bare dorsally and extensively setulose ventrally.
