Subfamily
Coenosiinae
Verrall, 1888
This large taxon is reasonably well defined and conceivably monophyletic (
Couri & Pont 2000
;
Kutty
et al
. 2014
). Among the two recognized tribes,
Limnophorini
and
Coenosiini
, only the latter is defined by alleged apomorphies. It was found that the great majority of the examined species representing 35 genera of
Coenosiinae
possess the prevalent muscid state
A4
, in which vein C is bare dorsally and extensively setulose ventrally.
