The terminalia of Calycomyza ipomaeae are similar to those of C. irreperta Spencer , which is differentiated primarily by the shape of the distiphallus tubules and by the coloration of the fronto-orbital plate. Calycomyza ipomaeae larvae form irregular blotches, usually on the surface of the leaf. This species has previously been reported forming mines on several Ipomoea L. species.
