nom. rev.
Centris modesta
Smith, 1854
. 371, 372.
Type data:
Smith (1854)
described this species based on an undetermined number of male specimens collected in an unknown locality in
Brazil
. A specimen belonging to the type series is currently housed at
NHMUK
and is here designated the
lectotype
. The specimen has the following data label: Type H.
T
. [red-rimmed circular label, printed]\ B.M.
TYPE HYM
. [printed] 17B.908 [handwritten]\ [light blue label]
Brazil
[handwritten]\
Centris modesta
Sm
Type [handwritten].
Type
locality:
Brazil
.
Comments: Shortly after its description,
C
.
modesta
was proposed as a junior synonym of
C
.
obsoleta
(
Ducke, 1910
)
. This synonymy remained unchanged until now that the
lectotypes
of both species were studied in detail. Although superficially similar, both species are valid, so the synonymy proposed by
Ducke (1910)
must be no longer considered correct.
The
type
locality cannot be further narrowed down than to
Brazil
, although
Friese (1901)
mentioned that the specimen was collected in the northern locality of Santarém.
