Capitella capitata capitata
(Fabricius, 1780)
Notes
Questionable status. Species complex. Several sibling species have been separated from
Capitella capitata
sensu lato worldwide since
Grassle and Grassle (1976)
showed it to constitute a complex of species.
Blake (2009)
restricts
Capitella capitata
sensu stricto to Arctic areas and considers Mediterranean specimens, including the description by
Fauvel (1927)
, to show significant differences to
Capitella capitata
and thus to belong to other species. In Greece, there is evidence so far of at least another sibling species population (
Gamenick et al. 1998
). However, because of the high morphological similarity of the various sibling species, they cannot be reliably distinguished in routine investigations (
Blake 2000
). See also notes under
Capitella teleta
