Remarks
This is a fairly common, widespread species that has been molecularly examined as a representative of genus
Monteiroconus
. Historically, this species has been mistaken for
M. ambiguus
. However, there are constant features in shell morphology that allow a distinction between these two species, mainly the larger size and angulated, broader shoulder in the latter. In any case, a molecular examination of
M. ambiguus
might clarify whether the separation from
M. tabidus
at the species level is justified. We provisionally consider both of them as separate valid species.
