Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North and South Carolina, Florida, and Gulf of Mexico ), Antilles, north of South America, and Brazil (from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul ) ( Melo 1996 , as P. spinicarpus ). Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 550 m . Found on sand, gravel, broken shells, coral, and mud bottoms ( Melo 1996 ; Coelho et al. 2008 ). Remarks. Previously recorded as Portunus spinicarpus and Portunus ( Achelous ) spinicarpus ( Coelho 1967 /1969; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1992 ; Barreto et al. 1993 ; Melo 1996 ; Coelho et al. 2008 ).
