Austrotinodes Schmid, a South and Central American caddisfly genus, newly recorded in Australia, with the description of new species (Trichoptera: Ecnomidae) Author Cartwright, David I. text Zootaxa 2009 2009-06-26 2142 1 1 19 https://biotaxa.org/Zootaxa/article/view/zootaxa.2142.1.1 journal article 10.11646/zootaxa.2142.1.1 1175-5326 5320938 Austrotinodes doota sp. nov. Figs 1–3 Diagnosis. Austrotinodes doota is grouped with Austrotinodes varus , A. bifurcatus and A. theischingeri mainly on the basis of large, fused inferior appendages in the male. It is distinguished from others in the group by the inferior appendages, which are very broad near the middle and with length about same as width. Description. Head, body and wings light brown; wings similar to A. varus ( Fig. 4 ). Forewing length about 3.2 times width: male 4.3 mm . Forewing fork 2 sessile, length about 1.2–1.3 times length fork 3; length fork 3 about 2.8–3.0 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 2.1–2.2 times length cross-vein m. Hindwing length about 3.2 times width; fork 2 with footstalk relatively short, length footstalk about 0.5 times length cross-vein r-m, fork 2 about same length as fork 3. Male. Tergum X membranous ( Fig. 3 ). Superior appendages in lateral view, forked, with larger apically directed fork and smaller, more slender, ventral branch and with a pair of long, curved, ventrally directed processes arising from near the bases ( Fig. 1 ); in dorsal view, length about 2.5 times width, apices slightly incurved ( Fig. 3 ). Phallus generally tube-like, ventrally broadened subapically, with an embedded spine; with a single down-curved sword-like process (phallic guide) arising from near the base of the inferior appendages ( Fig. 1 ). Inferior appendages fused, strongly dorso-ventrally flattened; in ventral view, length about same as width, broadest and rounded laterally near the middle, narrowed subapically, with truncated apex ( Fig. 2 ); in lateral view, length about 3 times width, broadest near the middle, narrowed in apical third, with upturned dorsally directed apex ( Fig. 1 ). Female unknown. Holotype male (specimen CT-479 figured): Queensland , Goddard Ck , Kirrama State Forest , 18°06'S , 145°41'E , Apr 1990 , G. Theischinger ( NMV , T- 20348). Etymology. Doota - Aboriginal word for fat (inferior appendages). Remarks. This species is known from only one specimen from the type locality in north-eastern Queensland (latitude 18°06'S ).
