(by original designation).
Diagnosis.
Only two ocelli clearly evident, medial ocellus reduced and lateral ocelli widely separated; antennae less than FW length; wings relatively narrow, hyaline with dark mottled pattern, more pronounced in FW; costal area relatively narrow, subcostal veinlets almost all simple, sub-parallel, not divergent basally; FW RP stem relatively short (longer in HW); RP in both wings with approximately 12 branches, inner and outer gradate crossvein series elongate, sub-parallel and diverging distally towards wing apex, more basal RP crossveins arranged semiregularly in two short series; FW RP with distal branches interlinked by crossveins along wing margin; FW medial fork immediately distal to origin of RP1; MA and MP with regular pectinate branching distally in both wings; FW CuA and CuP with similar number of pectinate branches; FW A1 with at least five pectinate branches.
Comments
. The only extant representative of
Protosmylinae
in the New World,
Paryphosmylus
is distinctive based on the presence of marginal crossveins along the posterior forewing margin, interlinking the end-twigging forks of the R and M branches. Additional diagnostic features of this genus are the relatively narrow wings and multiple elongated gradate series crossveins with outer gradates curved towards the wing apex. This species is known from only two specimens, both from
Ecuador
. The genitalia of both sexes is unknown at present.
