Diagnosis.
face yellow pruinose, facial swelling extending over lower facial half; frons black, yellow pruinose laterally; palpus black with, yellow setose on first segment and black setose on second; antennae black; thorax black with yellow stripes; coxae gray pruinose, with yellow setae, femora black with apical 1/3 reddish; wings slightly obscured by yellowish microtrichia; abdomen black, lateral of tergites 1–5 with gray pruinescence, pruinescence on tergite 5 less abundant, tergites 1–4 with thin yellow setae laterally, more abundant on tergites 2 and 3.
Redescription
.
Holotype
male. Measurements: body
15 mm
, wing
12 mm
.
Head
: face yellow pruinose, facial swelling extending over lower half; mystacal setae covering pronounced region with black setae above and yellow setae on subcranial margin; frons black, yellow pruinescence laterally, bisected in middle by longitudinal depression, a tuft of black setae above each antenna; orbital setae black; ocellar tubercle black, black setose; postocular setae black; occiput yellow pruinose except behind ocellar tubercle, black; upper occipital setae black and lower occipital setae yellow with some mixed black setae; palpus black yellow setose on first segment and black on second; proboscis black yellow setose ventrally; antennae black, scape and pedicel black setose, postpedicel with sparse yellow pruinescence and black setae dorsally on basal half.
Thorax
: second cervical sclerite black with thin black setae; pronotum light brown, antepronotum with thick and thin black setae on anterior margin; postpronotum with thick and thin black setae only laterally; postpronotal lobe reddish with black setae; three notopleural setae, four supra-alar and three or four postalar, all yellow; scutum black, yellow pruinose laterally and along transverse suture; paramedial stripe yellow pruinose, medial stripe glossy black; dorsocentral setae just before transverse suture; scutellum yellow pruinose, one pair of yellow marginal setae, long and thin black setae between them; pleura light brown with gray pruinescence; anepisternum with thin black setae posteriorly.
Legs
: coxae gray pruinose, yellow setose, femora black with apical 1/3 reddish, tibiae and tarsomeres reddish, fore femur with black setae, mid and hind femora with thin yellow setae on posterior and ventral surfaces; fore tibial setae black except posteroventral surface yellow setose; mid tibia with long yellow and short black setae, hind tibia with black and yellow setae; tarsomeres with black setae; pulvilli yellowish; claws black, yellow on basal third.
Wing
yellowish light brown, hyaline alula; halter light brown.
Abdomen
: black, tergites 1–5 laterally with gray pruinose bands, less abundant on tergite 5; tergites 1–4 with thin yellow setae laterally, more abundant on tergites 2 and 3; black setae on posterior margin of tergites 1–4; sternites 1–5 white pruinose with thin yellow setae, remaining black with black setae; terminalia shining black, black setose. Terminalia: not studied.
FIGURES 36–37.
Neodiogmites mixtus
(Carrera)
. Female terminalia: 36, sternite VIII, ventral view; 37, tergite VIII, dorsal view. Scale: 1 mm.
Female: face red and black on facial swelling; frons, occiput, pronotum, and scutellum black; scutum and pleura black without yellow pruinescence; legs reddish, except anteriorly on coxae and on apex of femora, black; tergites 1–5 laterally with only faint bands of gray pruinescence, setae less abundant than in male. Terminalia: acanthophorite spines black; cerci elongated, apices rounded (
Figs 36, 37
); sternite VIII with only membranous mediolateral area, medial elongate cone of posterior margin with a concave indentation at apex, small notch laterally that connects with membranous mediolateral area (
Fig. 36
).
Variations
: number of notopleural, supra-alar and postalar setae and color of femora.
Comments
:
Neodiogmites mixtus
can be separated from other species of the genus especially by the convex shape of the facial swelling, which begins before midline of face. In the other species the swelling is only an elevation of the subcranial margin, and the female genitalia have no central membranous area (
Fig. 37
).
