Description.
In size, shape and coloration very similar to
Kybos virgator
Ribaut
,
K. volgensis
(Vilbaste)
and
K. albilacustris
Tishechkin
and distinguishable from those species only by genital morphology and apodemes.
Body length: 4.0–
4.5mm
(
Holotype
4.1mm
).
Male genital apparatus: Pygofer appendages and anal collar (
Fig. 5
E) as in
K. virgator
. Aedeagus shaft (
Fig. 5
A) as in
K. virgator
, lateral appendages somewhat variable, generally rather wide and stout (
Fig. 5
D), in lateral view normally ventrally protruding beyond the shaft, sometimes slightly (
Fig. 5
A), sometimes almost perpendicularly (
Fig. 5
B), in ventral view only slightly diverging in caudal direction (
Fig. 5
C).
Apodemes: 2nd abdominal tergum (Fig. 6A) with well developed apodemes, about as long as wide. 3rd abdominal tergum (Fig. 6B) with distinct apodemes, almost reaching hind margin of tergum. 2nd abdominal sternum (Fig. 6C) with very short apodemes, not reaching hind border of 3rd sternum.
Diagnosis.
K. albitalicus
sp. nov.
strongly resembles
K. virgator
(Figs 7A,7B), from which it differs by the shape and orientation of the aedeagal appendages and above all by the extremely short apodemes of the 2nd abdominal sternum and the long apodemes of the 2nd abdominal tergum. Also the apodemes of the 3rd abdominal tergum are somewhat longer. In the latter character the new species is similar to
K. volgensis
(Vilbaste)
(Figs 7C,7D), which differs from it, however, by longer apodemes of the 2nd abdominal sternum and narrow and strongly diverging aedeagal appendages.
K. albilacustris
displays apodemes similar to
K. virgator
, with the sternal apodemes somewhat shorter, and is therefore easily distinguishable from
K. albitalicus
. The characters of the tymbal organ in
Kybos albitalicus
display very little variability.
Distribution.
Kybos albitalicus
is present in Emilia-Romagna, Toscana, Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania.
Ecological data.
Host plant:
Kybos albitalicus
lives on
Salix alba
L., sometimes together with
K. virgator
. Probably also
S. eleagnos
Scopoli
is used as a host plant.
FIGURE 7.
Kybos virgator
Ribaut.
3rd abdominal tergum, ventral view (A); 1st–3rd abdominal sterna, dorsal view (B). After Ossiannilsson (1981).—
Kybos volgensis
(Vilbaste)
. 3rd abdominal tergum, ventral view (C); 1st–3rd abdominal sterna, dorsal view (D). After Ossiannilsson (1981).
Specimens were found from the beginning of June to the end of August. Probably the species is at least bivoltine.
Remarks.
Material recorded as
K
. cf.
virgator
in
Guglielmino
et al
. (2005)
and as
K
. gr.
virgator
by
Guglielmino & Bückle (2008)
is
K
.
albitalicus
.
We consider it doubtful that
K. albitalicus
and
K. virgator
evolved on the same host plant in the same area and the same period. Perhaps
K. albitalicus
evolved in
Italy
isolated from
K. virgator
on
Salix alba
and
K. virgator
immigrated or was introduced only recently. Or
K. albitalicus
evolved first on another host plant, which disappeared due to climate changes and
K. albitalicus
therefore was compelled to a shift to another plant, previously colonized by
K. virgator
.
