This record is based on two pictures taken underwater in Beirut ( June 2000 ). The species has never been observed or collected in the Mediterranean afterwards . Distribution. Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, South Africa , Persian Gulf, Socotra , Madagascar , Al- dabra and western Mascarenes east to Society Islands, north to southern Japan , south to Western Australia, New Caledonia , Lord Howe Island and Tonga . Conservation. IUCN: Global ( LC : 12 March 2015 ). Capture and threats: Unknown. Occurrence: Very rare. Non-indigenous species, no conservation action needed .
