The subfamily
Asilinae
is characterized by the bare, simple antennal style; the wing’s closed and stalked marginal cell and two submarginal cells; setose anatergites; the unrotated male genitalia; and the elongated female ovipositor. In the South Korean species recorded, the male aedeagus is three pronged, or trifid at apices.
Aneomochtherus sinensis
has a reduced facial gibbosity. The female cercus of
Philonicus albiceps
is the only member of the subfamily with spines.
