Tirons of the world: a review of ‘ tironid’ amphipods, description of new genera and species, and establishment of a new subfamily Tironinae Stebbing, 1906 stat. nov. Classification. The families Synopiidae Dana, 1853 and Tironidae Stebbing, 1906 were synonymized under the former name by J.L. Barnard (1964) , a move that has not been disputed, and which then included the genera Tiron Lilljeborg, 1865 with 7 species and Pseudotiron Chevreux, 1895 with 2 species. These 2 genera and 9 species, together with 4 new genera and an additional 32 species described since 1964 (including 18 here), differ distinctly from the remaining synopiids. A new subfamily for this group of genera is diagnosed as Tironinae Stebbing1906 , stat. nov. Further analysis of the Synopiidae is needed to ascertain its full subfamilial structure, which is beyond the scope of this study.
