Description.
Holotype
Male: Head: Eyes bare. Frons 0.5x width of an eye, matt black, covered with a quite dense grey dusting which extends less intensely onto the lunule, parafacials and face. Frontal setae in a linear row of 8–9 pairs, these becoming slightly longer anteriorly where they are 0.3x as long as the orbital seta. A scattering of interfrontal setulae between these rows. Lunule bare. Antennae completely black, postpedicel length to depth ratio 1.35:1, arista microscopically pubescent. Anterior genal setulae in a single row of 5 along the mouth margin. Palpi black with a strong apical seta.
Thorax:
dorsum sub-shining black, sparsely grey dusted, sparsely covered in relatively strong setulae at most 0.4x length of orbital seta. Anepisternum more heavily grey dusted, with 3 setae arranged in a vertical row along the posterior margin, no apparent anterior setae, remainder of sclerite covered in a scattering of approximately 10 setulae. Katepisternum grey dusted, bare apart from a row of 4 setae near to and parallel with the dorsal margin on right side and 3 setae on the left side. One seta on proepimeron and one on proepisternum. Scutellum: disc subshining black, covered with a thin layer of greyish dusting, margin bare apart from four long, strong setulae, their length approximately 2x depth of the scutellum. Wing: membrane clear, slightly yellowish anteriorly and basally, veins yellow, wing length approximately
3.2mm
. Calypteres pale with a fringe of dark hairs. Legs, including the ventral fringe on t1, entirely black.
Abdomen
: tergites black, completely dusted grey. Covered in setulae, their length almost 0.5× the length of the fourth tergite. Each tergite with a posterior row of slightly longer setulae. Fifth tergite rounded triangular in dorsal view, length 3x the length of the fourth tergite.
Male terminalia
: (
Figs. 1–4
) Hypoproct forming a long, slender, sclerotised curving rod within the shell of the epandrium, the rod splitting to form a pair of broadened apical lobes which appear roughly triangular in posterior view with a few setae on the outer margins. The ventral margin of each lobe extended into two similar sized pointed projections (one lateral and one medial), a single long, pale seta extending ventrally from the medial margin. Cerci fused ventrally, in posterior view two lines bearing long setulae diverge dorsally. Ventral lobe of epandrium square in shape, ventrally and anteriorly only slightly protruding from the shell of the epandrium, with a group of 8–10 very long, pale setulae at posteroventral angle. Phallus simple, gradually tapering towards apex from a deeper basal portion (fig. 3 & 4). Parameres coalescent medially, their junction in lateral view with an L-shaped ventral projection, lateral arms simple, without processes or ornamentation (

Etymology:
The specific epithet refers to Nigel Jones, collector of one of the
paratypes
which initiated the process of producing this paper.
Remarks:
With the ventral lobe of the epandrium being square-shaped and not extending to any significant amount anteriorly from the shell of the epandrium this species belongs to the
Protearomyia withersi
species-group which also includes
P. rameli
MacGowan, 2014
,
P iberica
MacGowan, 2014
and
P. occidentalis
MacGowan, 2016
. It is however clearly distinguished from these species by the shape of the apical portion of the hypoproct.
